Carriers are listed from lowest to highest premium. Names and figures are blurred on this sample.

1

Face value

The amount paid to your beneficiaries. Pick a different amount and every premium recalculates. Coverage under $5 million may qualify for accelerated underwriting (see 7).

2

Term

How many years the premium stays level. Your minimum term is the years until your youngest child turns 18, rounded up to the next term offered. If your youngest is 5, that is 13 years, so choose at least 15 (or 20 if 15 is not offered). Any length beyond that is additional protection.

3

Health rating (Rate Class)

An insurance measurement of your overall health. It is not a choice; it is a class the carrier assigns you. If you completed our questionnaire, Estimated is our close estimate of each carrier's classification. It is not always available, but when it is, use it.

4

Payment mode

Annual, semiannual, quarterly, or monthly. Paying more often costs a little more over the year; on our sample, monthly came to about 2% more than annual.

5

Carrier

Carriers are listed from lowest to highest premium, and the order reshuffles when you change any setting. We only quote established, highly rated carriers, so compare them on price, underwriting, and conversion options.

6

Health rating by carrier

Our estimate of the class each carrier will assign you under its own guidelines. The same person can be Preferred at one company and Standard Plus at another, which is a big reason prices differ.

7

Underwriting and approval time

Accelerated means you may not have to go through a formal paramedical exam, and decisions come faster. Full means an exam and lab work, often taking over a month.

8

Row details

Click the arrow on any row to see its conversion rights: whether, and until when, you can switch the term policy to permanent coverage without new health questions.

Watch For

Picking a better health rating does not make it yours. Switching our sample client from Estimated to Preferred Best cut the lowest price about 20%, moved a different carrier to the top, and grew the list from 6 carriers to 16. Those prices assume near-perfect health. The carrier sets your final class and premium after underwriting.
